CHILDEBERT the 1st founded the Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés in 543. The street was a lane till 1652, when it was named "Rue des Saints-Pères". Number 59 was built around 1750 as a mansion house ; it was known as the Hôtel de La Vallette, parisian residence of the famous writer an poet Chateaubriand.
It was transformed into an hotel for tourists in 1815 ; it is one of the oldest building of that type in Paris. It belongs to the same family till 1922. Located in the core of Saint-Germain-des-Prés , the hotel PAS DE CALAIS has received very famous guests as J. -P. Sartre, S. de Beauvoir, R. Gary, J. Gréco, Picabia, F.
